Lesson Level : 2
Step Turn Drop
lesson
1m 5s

Video Details

The exercise focuses on improving the technique for the turn vault, specifically by aiming to land on both feet simultaneously. As the practice unfolds, participants are instructed to prioritize the mechanics of the jump and landing rather than fixating on a specific target. The steps involve pushing through, coordinating the turn, and ensuring that both feet touch down at the same time while facing the designated rail.

To successfully execute this movement, participants are encouraged to use their right hand to grasp the bar while concurrently managing their foot placement. This requires a coordinated effort to drop both feet down in unison. The ultimate goal is to achieve a comfortable turn while landing in a stable position, which is essential for safety and effectiveness during the vault.

Moving forward, the exercise also involves practicing in the opposite direction to diversify skills and reinforces the technique learned earlier. The emphasis is on consistency and control throughout the process, ensuring that participants can replicate the skill confidently in different scenarios.

Key Points:

  1. The focus is on landing on both feet simultaneously during the turn vault.
  2. Participants must coordinate hand movements and foot placements during the jump.
  3. Practicing in both directions aids in skill diversification and overall technique improvement.

The Lesson

Very similar to the level-1, this is the same movement, however you need to land on both feet at the same time, rather than one and then the other.

Start with a two-handed step-vault on a hip-height railing with the outside hand facing the opposite way in a supinated grip.
Once you are on top of the rail and the back leg is passing over the wall, twist towards the hand 180 degrees and bring both feet down onto the ground facing back the way you came.
As the feet come down, the inside hand re-grips the bar on the outside of the main hand.

For example:

  1. Grab the bar with Left-hand facing up, right hand facing down.
  2. Right-foot is placed into a step-vault position on the rail.
  3. Push up and remove the right hand off the bar.
  4. Bring the left foot up and over the rail.
  5. As the left leg is dropping on the other side, turn it back towards the left-hand.
  6. Turn the foot so it's facing back the way you came and join the second foot next to it.
  7. The right hand grabs the rail on the outside of the left hand.
  8. Both feet need to land together on the ball of the foot facing the rail.

The rail must be hip-height or above.

Repeat three times on both sides.
