The scissor kick speed vault is a visually appealing movement in Parkour, often associated with the early practitioners like the Yamakasi. While it adds a flair to the speed vault by emphasizing the top leg leading forward, it is not a necessary technique for effective Parkour practice. Its primary purpose is to enhance the aesthetics of the movement, making it appear cooler and more dynamic than it otherwise might be.
Executing the scissor kick involves coordinating both legs – leading with the top leg while scissoring the back leg to land smoothly. This technique brings a degree of nostalgia and fun, reminiscent of its usage in the early days of Parkour. Although it does not serve a significant functional role in Parkour, its engaging nature allows practitioners to experiment with their skills and creativity.
In conclusion, the scissor kick speed vault is primarily a stylistic element rather than a fundamental part of Parkour. Those proficient with the standard speed vault can consider incorporating the scissor kick for added visual excitement while maintaining their technique. Overall, it's a playful addition to enhance one's repertoire in Parkour.
Key Points:
- The scissor kick speed vault enhances the aesthetics of Parkour but is not essential for effective practice.
- It involves careful coordination of movement, highlighting the top leg while the back leg is scissored to land.
- The technique is nostalgic and fun, allowing for creativity but serves no significant functional purpose in Parkour.
During the standard speed-vault, you must lead with the wrong (outside) leg and switch in mid-air so that the correct (inside leg) is leading the landing.
Demonstrate a moving speed-vault over a hip-high wall or greater that is a standard brick-length wide or less, landing on the inside foot. Use a single hand on the wall. Perform with a jogging momentum.
Example:
- Start 10 paces away from the wall and take that run-in,
- The right foot should be the last step towards the wall.
- Place the right hand on top, palm down facing forwards.
- Jump up off the right foot, leaning onto the right arm.
- Bring your hips up high and bring your knees up to your chest.
- Extend your left leg ahead of your body in mid-air.
- Kick your right leg forward and the left leg back (in a scissor action)
- Pass both feet over the wall to the left of your right hand.
- Land on the right foot only on the other side of the wall.
- You should be orientated straight ahead.
- Step to the left foot with momentum and continue to jog out.
This is to demonstrate an off-leg switch that is more of an aesthetic movement rather than a functional one.
You must perform this three times on each side.
Hands must be flat and no steepled fingers.
No feet should touch the top of the wall.
Wall must be hip-height or greater and no wider than a standard brick-length.
