The POP Vault is an advanced movement technique that combines elements of a cat pass and a normal vault. The key difference lies in how one uses their foot against the wall to generate upward momentum. This technique is typically executed on a surface that is higher than what one would use for a standard vault, allowing for a more dynamic performance. Instead of aiming to land on top of the obstacle, the objective is to clear it completely by propelling oneself over.
When attempting the POP Vault, it is crucial to direct the body upwards while executing the movement. Many practitioners mistakenly land on or try to cling to the top of the obstacle, failing to fully utilize the vault's capabilities. A successful POP Vault requires confidence in pushing off the wall with greater force, ensuring that the focus remains on achieving height and distance over the barrier rather than just clearing the top edge.
In practice, the technique involves generating sufficient upward momentum through a strong kick off the wall, facilitating a successful landing beyond the obstacle. Emphasis is placed on maintaining speed and form throughout the execution to improve proficiency in the movement. By mastering the POP Vault, individuals can enhance their overall agility and performance in various parkour activities.
Key Points:
- The POP Vault combines elements of the cat pass and standard vault, emphasizing momentum to clear obstacles rather than landing on them.
- Proper technique involves pushing upward off the wall with force, ensuring focus on height and distance.
- Practicing this movement improves agility and overall performance in parkour activities.
The traditional understanding of the pop-vault was to not land any feet on top of the wall. Perform the pop-vault to slide-vault or lazy-vault with only the hands touching the top of the wall.
Demonstrate a pop-vault on a chest-height or higher wall that is brick-length width or less. Land with no feet on top of the wall and move directly into the lazy-vault or slide-vault with no pausing or stopping. Momentum and consistent speed are required.
This is to demonstrate that you can pop onto a wall with a drop on the other side and move into a lazy-vault or slide-vault without loosing momentum or speed.
Example.
- Take two steps towards a chest-height wall.
- Kick the left foot onto the side of the wall using the ball-of-the-foot and use it to lever your body higher.
- As you kick the foot on the wall, place both hands on top of the wall.
- Straighten your arms as you bring the right foot up and swing it over the top of the wall.
- Remove the right hand from the wall as the leg passes over the wall.
- Bring the left leg up, bend the knee and tuck it underneath you, passing over the wall to perform a slide-vault.
- Place the right hand behind you onto the wall again to re-orientate your hips and control the drop.
- Any landing is acceptable.
You must perform three times on each side.
You can take any number of steps into the kick.
You must be going at a jogging-pace or faster.
Only the hands must touch the top of the wall.
