Practicing the side vault involves mastering the technique of both ascending and descending smoothly. After successfully executing the upward aspect of the vault, the next step is the descent on the opposite side. This phase is considered relatively easier, as it primarily involves dropping down from the elevated position. However, maintaining a forward-facing orientation during the exit is crucial to ensure proper landing dynamics.
As you prepare for the descent, it is essential to align your body in the same direction as the exit. A correct approach involves keeping your body posture forward and straight as you navigate the landing. Initially, the focus should be on landing on both feet, emphasizing balance and control. This foundational technique serves as the groundwork for more advanced movements, where you may eventually incorporate a staggered landing as your skills progress and more momentum is gained.
In summary, the side vault technique requires practice not only in the ascent but also in mastering a controlled descent. The emphasis should be on maintaining directional alignment while landing, starting with a two-foot landing before evolving into a more dynamic approach as skill improves. Establishing these basics is vital for further development in vaulting.
Key Points:
- Proper technique for the side vault includes mastering both ascent and descent.
- Maintaining a forward-facing position during the descent is critical for balance and control.
- Start with two-foot landings, progressing to more dynamic movements as skills develop.
Perform the side-vault exactly the same as level-2, however your feet should only touch the top of the wall for a maximum of one second or less.
This is to demonstrate a faster movement and flow from takeoff to landing.
Stand with the wall to your side, place both hands onto the wall, one on each side of the wall.
Jump your feet up together behind you, lean forwards onto your hands and land both feet onto the top of the wall together for a maximum one second. Drop both feet down onto the floor on the other side of the wall using the balls of the feet.
Make sure you repeat three times going in both directions so that you are side-vaulting both to your left and your right.
