Video Details

In performing climbing movements, especially when navigating walls, it's critical for individuals to focus on utilizing their feet effectively rather than relying solely on arm strength. Many climbers fail to incorporate a proper foot placement, which should ideally be at or around hip height, allowing climbers to leverage their legs for upward thrust while pulling with their arms. This foot positioning is not only about reaching higher but also about maintaining stability and control throughout the movement.

The technique of moving between two surfaces, such as when transitioning from one wall segment to another, can be improved significantly by prioritizing a step-up action. This step-up should be performed prior to making a turn to better position oneself for the next movement. In cases where descending or leveling out occurs, the use of a step-up is not necessary, but the climber should still push away from the wall to ensure proper movement and direction.

To enhance climbing efficiency, climbers should focus on maintaining their footing securely under their center of gravity while ensuring that the foot is well-anchored. This includes keeping the toes near hip level while executing movements like the 180 cat-to-cat transition. The balance between foot placement and arm movement plays a vital role in the overall effectiveness of climbing techniques, significantly impacting both performance and safety.

Key Points:

  1. Effective climbing relies heavily on proper foot placement, particularly at hip height, to facilitate upward movement rather than over-relying on arm strength.
  2. Transitioning between walls is best executed with an initial step-up, followed by a turn, while descending requires less height adjustment.
  3. Maintaining secure footing close to the body’s center of gravity is essential for stability and effective climbing technique.

The Lesson

Starting in an arm-jump (aka cat-leap) position, on one wall, Step up and kick away from the wall while turning 180 degrees to a second, parallel, wall. Landing in an arm-jump position.

Height is the key. Step up as high as you can on the wall while turning and then kicking the wall like a tic-tac.

Both walls must be 6-steps or further from each other. Both walls must be chest-height or greater.

Landing with knees bent, one leg higher than the other. One at hip-height, and underneath you. Landing feet first, then hands.

Arms must be bent on landing. Full finger length over the top. No overgrip onto the back edge of the wall - must be on the front edge corner of the wall.

Hold for 3 seconds.

Repeat three times, turning in both directions. Left and Right.

when we're doing the climb up uh the big
9.76
part that a lot of people Miss is that
12.36
step up of the foot um and inevitably
16.24
becomes all about just the arms pulling
19.359
um this is a mistake getting the foot up
22.72
high and gripping uh sort of hip height
25.92
is super important because pushing with
28.72
that foot is going to help get you on
31.719
top now we're going to look at the 180
35.2
cat to cat and or arm jump to arm jump
39.32
and this requires the step uh to get
44.559
height so if you were to do um you're
49.399
you're trying to get from one wall to
51
another wall so I'm going to go from
52.239
this wall to this wall and the issue is
56.68
this wall is a little bit lower um isn't
59.64
always obviously like you can be on
61.879
walls that are high going high to low or
64.04
whatever but generally you want to step
67.799
up to get height and then turn and it's
72.119
very much the step up first and then
75.56
turn
76.84
away if you're going downwards this
79.92
isn't required so you don't need to get
82.2
height because gravity is going to do
83.56
its work you just need to turn but you
85.52
still need to push away with the wall
88.72
like a Tic Tac so
90.52
I'm going to push with my right foot so
91.92
I'm going to um turn towards the camera
95.399
I'm going to step up with my right turn
98.399
and grab okay so let's get up in
101.96
here up here so I'm get my left foot up
106
and from here I'm going to step up with
107.719
my right first turn and cat so from
111.36
here to there okay to come back I don't
114.799
need to step
116.2
up I'm just going to turn Okay so there
120.079
are two sort of variations one to get
123.159
height stepping up and turning the other
126.24
one is to sort of either level to Lev or
128.8
going downwards you don't need to step
131.239
up generally though if you are doing
134.44
distance or height the Step Up is really
137.44
going to help um and getting used to
140
doing that uh yeah is going to be super
143.599
important the foot that's under you that
147.36
sort of starts high that needs to be
150.2
sort of roughly thigh height and you
152.8
should feel like you're not fighting it
154.68
you're not slide it's not slipping down
157.599
um it it's sort of stuck there and
159.56
you're really comfortable with that foot
161.68
being on the wall if you're fighting it
163.959
and it's starting to SL slide down it's
166.28
going to be really hard to step up as
168.76
you're working on that other foot not
171.2
sliding um so yeah get it really
173.2
underneath you sort of this height where
177.08
the toe is close to sort of like hip
179.319
level and then this one pushes as this
182.72
one steps up and that is the 180 cat to
186.959
cat

when we're doing the climb up uh the big

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:15,000
part that a lot of people Miss is that

3
00:00:12,000 --> 00:00:18,000
step up of the foot um and inevitably

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:22,000

5
00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:25,000
um this is a mistake getting the foot up

6
00:00:22,000 --> 00:00:28,000
high and gripping uh sort of hip height

7
00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:30,000
is super important because pushing with

8
00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:34,000
that foot is going to help get you on

9
00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:38,000
top now we're going to look at the 180

10

cat to cat and or arm jump to arm jump

11
00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:49,000
and this requires the step uh to get

12
00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:50,000
height so if you were to do um you're

13
00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:51,000
you're trying to get from one wall to

14
00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:56,000
another wall so I'm going to go from

15
00:00:52,000 --> 00:00:59,000
this wall to this wall and the issue is

16
00:00:56,000 --> 00:01:01,000
this wall is a little bit lower um isn't

17
00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:03,000
always obviously like you can be on

18
00:00:61,000 --> 00:01:06,000
walls that are high going high to low or

19
00:00:64,000 --> 00:01:12,000
whatever but generally you want to step

20
00:00:67,000 --> 00:01:14,000
up to get height and then turn and it's

21
00:00:72,000 --> 00:01:16,000
very much the step up first and then

22
00:00:75,000 --> 00:01:19,000
turn

23
00:00:76,000 --> 00:01:21,000
away if you're going downwards this

24
00:00:79,000 --> 00:01:22,000
isn't required so you don't need to get

25
00:00:82,000 --> 00:01:25,000
height because gravity is going to do

26
00:00:83,000 --> 00:01:28,000
its work you just need to turn but you

27
00:00:85,000 --> 00:01:30,000
still need to push away with the wall

28
00:00:88,000 --> 00:01:31,000
like a Tic Tac so

29
00:00:90,000 --> 00:01:34,000
I'm going to push with my right foot so

30
00:00:91,000 --> 00:01:37,000
I'm going to um turn towards the camera

31
00:00:95,000 --> 00:01:41,000
I'm going to step up with my right turn

32
00:00:98,000 --> 00:01:45,000
and grab okay so let's get up in

33
00:00:101,000 --> 00:01:46,000
here up here so I'm get my left foot up

34
00:00:106,000 --> 00:01:51,000
and from here I'm going to step up with

35
00:00:107,000 --> 00:01:54,000
my right first turn and cat so from

36
00:00:111,000 --> 00:01:55,000
here to there okay to come back I don't

37
00:00:114,000 --> 00:01:59,000
need to step

38
00:00:116,000 --> 00:01:62,000
up I'm just going to turn Okay so there

39
00:00:120,000 --> 00:01:66,000
are two sort of variations one to get

40
00:00:123,000 --> 00:01:68,000
height stepping up and turning the other

41
00:00:126,000 --> 00:01:70,000
one is to sort of either level to Lev or

42
00:00:128,000 --> 00:01:73,000
going downwards you don't need to step

43
00:00:131,000 --> 00:01:77,000
up generally though if you are doing

44
00:00:134,000 --> 00:01:79,000
distance or height the Step Up is really

45
00:00:137,000 --> 00:01:83,000
going to help um and getting used to

46
00:00:140,000 --> 00:01:87,000
doing that uh yeah is going to be super

47
00:00:143,000 --> 00:01:89,000
important the foot that's under you that

48
00:00:147,000 --> 00:01:92,000

sort of roughly thigh height and you

50
00:00:152,000 --> 00:01:96,000
should feel like you're not fighting it

51
00:00:154,000 --> 00:01:98,000
you're not slide it's not slipping down

52
00:00:157,000 --> 00:01:101,000
um it it's sort of stuck there and

53
00:00:159,000 --> 00:01:103,000
you're really comfortable with that foot

54
00:00:161,000 --> 00:01:105,000
being on the wall if you're fighting it

55
00:00:163,000 --> 00:01:107,000

00:00:166,000 --> 00:01:110,000
going to be really hard to step up as

57
00:00:168,000 --> 00:01:112,000
you're working on that other foot not

58
00:00:171,000 --> 00:01:116,000
sliding um so yeah get it really

59
00:00:173,000 --> 00:01:119,000

60
